What is Vishing? Part 2 of 6

The main purpose of vishing is to illegally acquire private, sensitive information from individuals or businesses. The types of valuable information that scammers may want to obtain include:

  • Confidential details such as bank accounts and credit card numbers.
  • Personal data like Social Security or identification numbers.
  • Security credentials, passwords, or PINs.

Attackers opt for voice communication because of two (2) unique advantages in manipulating victims, which are urgency and trust. Voice calls allow scammers to catch individuals off guard, leading victims to make impulsive decisions. Through voice calls, scammers can also establish a personal connection to potential victims, dynamically respond to the victim’s behavior, and exploit emotional cues, which cannot easily be achieved through standard phishing emails.

Vishing is increasingly attractive to scammers as technology makes deception easier and more effective. Scammers are also beginning to use sophisticated software to duplicate an individual’s voice, making fraudulent communication even more convincing.

As deepfake technology becomes more accessible, the distinction between a real and synthetic voice will become blurred, significantly increasing the danger of vishing attacks.
