Must Have HR Policies for 2024 (Part 3 of 3)

Since we are almost halfway into 2024, an internal HR review is critical for every employer. Below is a list of items, which is the third in a three (3) part series, that every employer should during the remainder of 2024.

Meals and break periods

Create transparency regarding meals and break periods, in order to ensure that employees are well-informed and can plan their workday efficiently. An employers policy should state the duration of meals and break periods, and also the number of breaks an employee is entitled to.

EEOC policy

The EEOC prohibits discrimination against job candidates or employees based on protected characteristics, such as:

  • Race
  • Sex
  • Age
  • Religion
  • Disability
  • National origin
  • Color
  • Genetics

Electronic communications policy

Employers should have clearly defined expectations on appropriate use of company electronic resources such as email, IM tools, confidential electronic records, etc. Also, employers should clarify that they have the right to monitor the use of any company property, which includes computers, internet usage, etc.

Employment laws are complex, and employers should consult with a law firm that is well versed in employment law matters.
