AI is increasingly being used to assist with treatment planning, case presentations, and patient communication. While this can enhance efficiency and consistency, it also introduces significant liability risks if not properly managed.
AI-generated outputs, while often polished and convincing, are not always accurate. As emphasized in the underlying framework, AI systems can produce misleading or fabricated information, particularly when used outside of controlled environments. In a dental setting, reliance on such outputs without proper verification could lead to incorrect treatment recommendations, miscommunication with patients, or documentation errors.
From a legal standpoint, the responsibility for clinical decisions remains with the dentist—not the AI tool. If an AI-assisted recommendation leads to an adverse outcome, the practice may still be held liable for negligence or failure to meet the standard of care. This is especially critical in procedures involving higher risk, such as implants, endodontics, or surgical interventions.
An effective AI policy must clearly define that AI is a support tool only and cannot replace professional judgment. It should require that all AI-generated content related to treatment planning be reviewed and validated by a licensed provider before being used in patient care. Additionally, practices should implement documentation protocols that reflect human oversight and decision-making.
By establishing clear boundaries around AI use in clinical contexts, dental practices can leverage technology while maintaining compliance and protecting against liability.
